Its Time for the Fiddlers!

The Fiddlers will be playing in the Clubhouse on the 16th of November. The first of 3 shows this winter. Come on out and spend the day listening to some good old Country/Western music brought to you by some fine entertainers. Some are your neighbors from the park. The music starts at 11 am. We stop for lunch at 12 and pick it up again until 3pm. Please bring a covered dish to share at lunch. We’d like to see a good turnout of the SKP members to support these folks.

Veterans Day Celebration

On Monday, November 11, 2019 at 10:00AM a program to honor and recognize our veterans took place at the ClubhouseThe Bluebonnet Officers wish to thank all those who came out to honor our veterans.  We welcomed friends from the American Legion   as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Opening remarks on the history of Veterans Day were made and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Ron Erkert led us in the singing of the National Anthem.  Ron then sang for us the Civil War ballad “Lorena”.  Edmund Strickler led us in a prayer of thanks and gratitude to our veterans. Edmund also gave a reading from Alden Solovy’s Poem, To Bend Light.

The D’Hanis High School Marching Band led by Mr. Chris Castro  performed several selections to the delight of the crowd.  Donations in the amount of $512 were made by LSC Members to the band.    Refreshments were served by Minta Ross, Rose Schafer and Cindy Smith.

A Special Thank You to our own Bluebonnet Vice-President, Randi Rigsby for her many hours of hard work to organize this event.

Mournful Wail on Monday

On Monday, Nov 4, about 1:20 PM, the only operable Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive, one of the largest steam locomotives in the world, will be steaming through D’Hanis on its way east from Del Rio to San Antonio. We in the LSC will be able to hear the whistle and see the smoke, if not the locomotive itself, as it passes. There are stops scheduled in Uvalde, Sabinal, and Hondo for public viewing.

No. 4014 is a 600 ton, 7,000 HP, 132′ long articulated 4-8-8-4 monster that was built in 1941 and traveled over a million miles before being retired in 1961. It spent over 50 years on static display at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA before being re-acquired by UP, and its complete rebuild in the UP locomotive shop in Cheyenne, WY was finished just this last May. Since most of the railroad water towers are gone, No. 4014 has two additional water tank cars hitched just behind the tender, followed by the historic passenger cars that make up the rest of the train.
